Academy for Sport - 'In Pursuit of Excellence'

The “Academy for Sport” is a new project at BMS which provides a support mechanism for our sportsmen and women that have the potential to achieve at the highest levels in sport.

Scientific research has concluded that it takes eight to twelve years of training for a talented athlete to reach elite levels. This is called the ten year or 10,000 hour rule. For athletes, coaches and parents this translates as slightly more than three hours of practice daily for ten years.

“It takes 10 years of extensive training to excel in anything”

Herbert Simon, Nobel Laureate

Unfortunately in many sports, training is still approached with an attitude best characterized as the "peaking by Friday" approach. We know that a long-term commitment to training is required to produce elite athletes in all sports. Therefore, the sporting stars of tomorrow will need to be practising, training and preparing today, whilst they are still at school – this is where the Sports Academy can help!

The services it provides are dependent on the needs of the individual athlete and may include the following:

Coaching

Individual Academic & Sports Policy

Financial Support

Mentoring/Academic Mentoring/Liaison

Medical Insurance

Medical Support

Strength & Conditioning

Sport Psychology

Lifestyle (Nutrition, Life-balance, Drugs in Sport etc.)

Kit & Equipment

Please note the Academy for Sport is not a recruitment drive to make our teams stronger; it is designed to act in the best interests of the academy athlete to help ensure the individual’s potential both academically and in the sporting arena are fully met.
