WELLINBOROUGH HORSE SHOW

Wednesday 27 May 2009

In the middle of half term, three riders from BMS were keen to make up a team for a show jumping competition at a height of 2.0’. The team was made up of Jessica Brown (YR 7), Kelly Attwood (YR8 ) and Tom Palmer (YR9). All three riders are to be congratulated on superb riding which led to clear rounds with no faults.

Tom Palmer rode twice on two different horses and both were clear rounds. His second round on ‘Blue’ was particularly fast and as the second half of the round was timed, this improved the team’s overall score significantly. The competition was fierce but the BMS team won the whole class (class 2) against 12 other schools and a trophy and rosettes were presented by Mr and Mrs Redden, Friends of Wellingborough School. Tom Palmer also came second as an individual in this class so an excellent result. We’ll be back next year!

EQUESTRIAN MATCH AT BACKNOE END E.C. Thursday 21 May

BMS v Dame Alice

Four riders from BMS and four from Dame Alice competed in an equestrian match at Backnoe End on 21 May. Our team was made up of Theo Cassell (year7), Megan Hutchinson (year 8), Todd Cartwright, (year 10 ) and Kelly Attwood (year 8). Each team member had to jump two rounds of about 2’3” on the same horse. All four BMS members rode with skill, enthusiasm and a calm and intelligent approach. Out of the 8 rounds ridden by our team of four there were only 3 faults.

Unfortunately the Dame Alice team gained 12 faults altogether and one rider was eliminated for 3 refusals. A good match and a very well deserved victory!

INTER-SCHOOL’S SHOW-JUMPING AT POTTON on 10 MAY

A team of three competed at the inter-school’s show jumping event on Sunday 10 May and were placed 7th. The team consisted of

THEO CASSELL and JESSICA BROWN (YR 7),and KELLY ATTWOOD (YR 8).

Each competitor had to do an initial show jumping round and then a second round in the ‘jump off’ if their first round was clear. All competitors did well and Kelly Attwood is to be especially congratulated at being placed overall 3rd in her 2’9” round of jumping. Well done!

INTER-SCHOOL’s SHOW JUMPING AT WILSTEAD

SUNDAY 7 DECEMBER 2008

Victory was sweet in the Wilstead inter-school’s competition which was integrated into the general 2.3 class. The weather was beautiful, crisp and white with a clear blue sky the entire day. All classes started late and the day was long but the wait made victory even sweeter.

The team was made up of ;

THEO CASSELL - YEAR7

JESSICA BROWN - YEAR 7

LAUREN GREEN - YEAR 6

KATE HOLLANDS - YEAR 9

Theo Cassell came 2nd as an individual in a very large 2.3 class, with the second fastest clear round out of over 30 entries. Lauren Green performed a superb clear round and Jessica Brown bravely overcame some initial reluctance from her pony, who was not impressed by the ‘strobe effect’ lighting that the strong sunlight created in the arena. A strong second round enhanced the BMS position. Unfortunately Kate’s horse had a suspected back problem and she very sensibly, withdrew him.

The Equestrian team was delighted with its victory, the first we have achieved in a major competition.

POTTON INTER-SCHOOLS SHOW JUMPING

SUNDAY 11 MAY 2008

Glorious sunshine met the BMS Equestrian team when they arrived for the annual Potton Inter-Schools Show Jumping Competition, a far cry from last year when spectators spent the day huddling under umbrellas – parasols would have been more appropriate this year!

The team comprised Tom Palmer, Year 8, Kelly Attwood, Year 7, Theo Cassell, Year 6 and Lauren Green, Year 5. The team arrived punctually but sadly this punctuality was not replied by the results announcers! Eventually the results were announced and Kelly and Theo claimed 4th place in their pairs jumping round. Kelly Attwood was placed 4th as an individual in the same round at 2’3 and Theo was 8th . The BMS team won 7th place in the overall inter-school’s competition in which 3 of the team jumped at 2’ 3 and Tom Palmer jumped the 2’6 course at a tremendous speed. Well done to everyone on what was a long, hot, but very fruitful day.

EQUESTRIAN MATCH BMS v DAHS

Thursday 1 May at Backnoe End Equestrian Centre

The weather was dry and the horses were well behaved at Backnoe End E.C. for the mixed junior and senior team match on 1 May. The BMS team consisted of Megan Mason (Year12), Todd Cartwright and Jonathan Matthews (both Year 9) and Theo Cassell (Year 6). All completed an excellent show jumping round although Megan unfortunately had one fence down accruing 4 faults. The Dame Alice team replied with one fence down too so that at the end of the show jumping rounds both teams were neck and neck.

In the dressage tests, marks were hard to earn and the DAHS team came out on top. This meant overall victory for Dame Alice but it was an extremely pleasant match in which nobody fell off and was enjoyed by everyone. Megan Mason was particularly welcome in her first competition for BMS. Congratulations to everyone!

DECEMBER 2007 TOM PALMER AT OLYMPIA

Tom Palmer, Year 8 competed in the Pony Club Mini Major Competition at the London International Horse Show at Olympia in December. Tom was paired with Jean Mark Nicolas who unfortunately had a stop at the first fence.

Tom rode a very good round and finished 7th overall. To compete in front of such a huge crowd, at such a prestigious event was a great experience for Tom. Even if driving a horsebox into London was a little stressful!

KIMBOLTON v BMS

Match at Backnoe End Equestrian Centre

THURSDAY 17 May 2007

Vicki Davis (year 13), Amy Ennion (year 9), Hannah Berrill and Anharad Binnington (both year 12) formed a BMS team in an equestrian match against Kimbolton. Each team had to do a show jumping round of about 2’3 followed by a dressage test. The entire BMS team completed clear rounds on their horses but each of the Kimbolton team had one fence down.

The dressage tests were Kimbolton’s strength but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to win them the match as the overall scores made BMS the clear winners. A particularly welcome first victory over Kimbolton in these equestrian matches. Well done to the team.

BMS V BHS on 1 FEBUARY 2007

A ‘Co-Ed’ Bedford Modern team of four students (two boys and two girls) competed at Backnoe End Equestrian Centre on 1 February and beat Bedfod High in a show jumping and dressage competition. Each team rode the same four horses in turn and had to demonstrate two skills. One in a show jumping round and another skill in a dressage test. Both teams gained clear rounds in the show jumping but Bedford Modern’s dressage scored more highly giving us an overall score of 357 against Bedfod High’s 348 score.

Dressage was a relatively new skill to Todd Cartwright and Jonathan Matthews so they did particularly well but congratulations to an excellent team performance!

The team comprised:

TODD CARTWRIGHT 8 JJS

JONATHAN MATTHEWS7MJS

AMY ENNION 9AGH

REBECCA ENNION7WDH

INTER-SCHOOLS SHOW JUMPING COMPETITION at

MANOR FARM Equestrian Centre, Huntingdon.

5 November 2006

A team of three entered the inter-schools’ Show Jumping Competition on Sunday 5 November at Manor Farm Equestrian Centre and the team consisted of

TODD CARTWRIGHTYR 8

AMY ENNION YR 9

REBECCA ENNIONYR 7

Amy Ennion was awarded 6th place in the 2’ 0 section in a timed round in which she cleared all fences. Rebecca Ennion also was placed, coming 6th in the 2’3” competition in a superbly fluent and extremely energetic round. Todd Cartwright entered the 2’6” competition but his mount was less obliging than she could have been, refusing some of the jumps and certainly underperforming compared to the performance witnessed in the practice ring by everyone earlier.

Nevertheless the team came 7th out of a total of 17 school teams; the day was good fun and invaluable experience for everyone involved. Congratulations to all competitors and thanks to those who came to support!

CROSS COUNTRY TRAINING AT Hill House, CARLTON

7 October 2006

The weather on Saturday 7 October was superb and sunshine abundant which was a surprise to us all as the course had been closed the day before due to the heavy rainfall making it dangerous. Amy Ennion, Rebecca Ennion, Todd Cartwright and Jonathan Matthews enjoyed roaming over a range of fences, logs and ditches. Our trainer, Sara Poulton, was superb and managed to keep everyone interested and stretched throughout. Mr Ennion declared that Amy’s horse (O’Ryan) would not go downhill over logs only to see him and Amy to do exactly. A good day when a lot was learnt has prepared us well for our next inter-school’s cross country.

BMS v KIMBOLTON

27 September 2006

A team of four equestrians competed in a fixture against Kimbolton at Backnoe End Equestrian Centre, Thurleigh. The team was made up of Vicki Davis Y13, Hannah Berrill and Jade Evans Y12 and Amy Ennion Y9. Each team member rode four horses from Backnoe End to do a show jumping round followed by a dressage test. The judging was done by Sharon Jackson, Proprietor of Backnoe End, and Bedford Modern won the show jumping round easily. Hannah was not pleased with her particular mount which was apparently rather partial to regularly putting in a stop just before a fence! However, her jumping round and dressage test were first class. Although Kimbolton won overall there were superb dressage tests from Hannah and Amy. Well done to the team and we look forward to a re-match next term.

Summer 2006

The highlight of the term was our own BMS show at Backnoe End on July which was a small scale, informal event but with competitors from Sharnbrook, Bedford High School and St. Andrews. The day was scorching and the heat wave warning was justified as temperatures soared to 37 0 C . Everyone had a go at the clear round, including Mrs Pollard (who did the wrong course) and thanks to Robin and Wendy. Berrill who did the judging. The winner of the 2’6 .and 3’ 0 was won by Holly Hobbs.from Bedford High but Rebecca Ennion and Hannah Berrill came a very close 2nd in each class respectively. Most importantly everyone had a good time.

We also had cross country teams entered at Potton on 14 May and 9 July. Team members included Katie Berrill, Vicki Davis, Amy Ennion and Lauren Green. A fixture against Wellingborough School on 8 May led to defeat but congratulations to Katie Berrill, Alice Croxford, David Field and Alastair Hodge who came 2nd!

BMS v ST. ANDREWS

23 March Backnoe End

This fixture was hosted by BMS at our newly affiliated Equestrian Centre, Backnoe End in Thurleigh. Each team of 4 had to do a show jumping round and a dressage test. Although St Andrew’s won the overall competition our team rode superbly and there was some first class riding witnessed. The team worked well together and we had a lot of fun. Well done to Jatie Berrill, Alice Croxford, David Field and Alastair Hodge.

INTER-SCHOOL’S CROSS COUNTRY

Sunday 19 March Potton Cross-Country Course

A Bedford Modern Team of 3 competitors entered the school’s cross country competition on 19 March. Cross country is one of the most potentially dangerous events as the fences are fixed and are interspersed with ditches, banks and sand pits. Amy Ennion (Year 8) rode the course twice on two different horses and got round the course with only one refusal. Vicki Davis (Year 12) completed the course when given a lead by Amy Ennion. Katie Berrill (Year13) completed the bigger 2’9” course and her superb round on ‘George’ won her 3rd overall place out of 15 other competitors.

The team was placed in 8th place and rosettes were awarded to the BMS team. Congratulations!!
